Game
Axis Deer
Originally from India, the Axis Deer (also called the Chital Deer or
Spotted Indian Deer) was introduced to Hawaii in 1867
as a gift to King Kamehameha the Great. They were initially released on the
island of Moloka'i, where their population quickly grew. The first
introduction of the Axis Deer on Lana'i occurred in the 1920's. They have
since grown to a population that exceeds the number of people living in
the Basin, estimated at over 3,500.
Mouflon Sheep
The Mouflon is said to be one of the two ancestors of all sheep breeds
today. Introduced to Lana'i in the 1960's, Mouflon Sheep now occupy the more
arid North and West coasts of the island.
Game Birds
Introduced in the 1930's by George Munro, an abundance of game birds

are:
- Hawaiian Blue Pheasant
- Ring-necked Pheasant
- Chukar Partridge
- Grey Francolin Partridge

- Erkle's Francolin
- Gambol's Quail
